About Us

The Louks/Loucks Family Association (LLFA) is a Canadian-American organization that was formed on July 31, 1993.  It publishes newsletters periodically throughout the year and hosts biennial meetings in both the United States and Canada.  For information on how to become a member, please click on the "Membership" link above.

Our association is a non-profit group dedicated to various Laux/Louks/Loucks families and their history with an emphasis on descendants of the individuals who shared the surname and settled in America during the early 1700s.  We also give special attention to the eight men with such names who were brought to New York with a larger group of Palatine immigrants in 1710.  Go to the "Laux--A to Z" link for more on this topic, or check out the "Pre-1709 Study" section for an update on our efforts to determine Laux origins.

Because DNA testing is opening up new avenues in genealogical research, several of our members have been tested to establish links to their ancestors.  For the most part, testing has been done through FamilyTreeDNA.com and its Palatine Project, which is attempting to establish a database of descendants from the hundreds of original Palatine settlers in America.  This company provides special rates for those who qualify.  To learn more about DNA testing and to see some of the LLFA results, click on "DNA Research."

We hope that this site will provide a platform for further research by bringing together like minded "cousins" who will give their advice to others and freely share their findings.  Because there are many websites of interest to our members and the greater Louks/Loucks population, we are providing links to them on our "Resources" page.  We will also be putting up "Photographs" of significance to our various family histories.

Recent News

The biennial reunion meeting of the Louks/Loucks Family Association was held over the weekend of September 23 through 25 in Simcoe and Norfolk County, Ontario.  Our 2011 festivities coincided with an important local history event, the 35th annual Norfolklore Genealogy Fair on Saturday, September 24.  Members were able to attend it at the cost of just $5 in addition to their $5 (U.S. or Canadian) LLFA reunion registration fees.

Many LLFA members, especially those descended from Henry and Sara (Sluyter) Louks, as enumerated in LLFA President Ross McCurdy's latest Louks book, have roots in the Clear Creek area of the county and had many avenues for research while in the area.

The Norfolklore Genealogy Fair, the oldest such event in Ontario, has attracted dozens of genealogical resource provider/exhibitors and hundreds of genealogists researching their Upper Canada/Ontario/Norfolk roots.  Many out-of-print books, hard-to-find books, maps, historical transcriptions too numerous to list and much, much more were available.

The $5 fair entrance fee also included free admission to the Norfolk Historical Society at the Eva Brook Donly Museum & Archives, just two blocks away.  The usual admission to the Archives alone is $10.00 and volunteers were be available there to help with local research questions.

For more information on the weekend of activities, including the results of the LLFA business meeting, reports on DNA testing, historical research, and more, as well as other articles of importance to our organization, look for the next member's newsletter.  If you are not a member already, or if you need to renew your membership, click on the membership tab above now!
